CAMBUSTION

Fast Emissions Instrumentation & Automotive Engineering Services

History

Cambustion is an independent, private company formed in 1987 by a research group who were working at Cambridge University Engineering Department. The idea arose to fit a miniature FID operating at sub-atmospheric pressure with a capillary sample tube, thereby yielding a very fast response time. This instrument, when fitted to an engine exhaust, could record HC emissions on millisecond timescales.

The first product was the HFR100 fast FID. Over the years, this has undergone four major revisions and the current HFR500 system was introduced in 1998.

Other fast response analyzers were developed using similar techniques but based on the standard detection principles which are known to the engineering community (e.g. Chemiluminescence Detector for NO and Non-Dispersive Infra-Red for CO and CO2).

The DMS500 fast particulate spectrometer (first available 2002) offers real time particle size and number data during transient engine operation. This is based on the principle of differential mobility classification.

The CSV500 high speed sampling valve was developed to address the increasing need to understand cylinder contents on a cycle-by-cycle basis. Coupled with Cambustion fast gas analysers, it allows measurements of EGR ratio, HC concentration and in-cylinder NOx formation.

The most recent addition to the range, the Diesel Particulate Generator, offers a complete DPF testing solution without requiring an engine. By providing a diesel fuelled means of loading and regenerating DPFs, the DPG displaces expensive engine test facilities.

In addition Cambustion has offered engineering services to the automotive industry since 1991. A key element of our success has been the development of our in-house transient dynamometer control software to complement our fast analyser technology. Our initial activity focussed on gasoline emissions issues but recent years have seen a steady increase in diesel engine testing and development.
